Windows 10 not shutting down but restarting free download
Windows 10 not shutting down but showing lock screen after brief shutting down message? Here are the steps to fix the problem. After pressing the shutdown button either in the start menu, power user menu, or the lock screen, Windows 10 just briefly shows the shutting down message, blacks out the screen and then shows the lock screen.
However, one curious thing is that this has no effect on system restart. That is, if you press the Restart button, the system will restart normally.
It just behaves the same as before. There is no clear cut reason why Windows behaves the way it behaves. Maybe some application, service, or a buggy driver is messing with the Windows 10 shutdown process.
For example, in the case I encountered, it happened right after installing software which in turn installed its own service.
Even though the issue is a bit bizarre, the fix for it is pretty simple. The easiest way to fix the issue is to force shut down the system. When you do that, Windows ignores everything and just shuts down the PC. Once the PC is shut down properly, the problem should not arise again. The good thing is, you can force shutdown Windows with just a single command.
Just follow the steps as-is and you will be good. To execute the command, we need to run it as an administrator. As soon as you execute the command, Windows 10 should shutdown itself right away.
So, if the above method did not work, do give the below one a try. This action will open the Control Panel. By default, the fast startup option requires admin privileges to changes. That is it. Restart the system and you should no longer face the Windows 10 not shutting down problem. If you are still facing the problem, uninstall the last installed application, driver, or update.
If possible, do a system restore to a known good state. I hope that helps. If you are stuck or need some help, comment below and I will try to help as much as possible. Shutting Down Doesn’t Fully Shut Down Windows 10 (But Restarting Does). How to Fix “Windows 10 Not Shutting Down” Error
In the traditional shutdown process, Windows fully shuts down everything, discards the running system state, and starts up from scratch the next time the PC boots. When you hibernate, Windows saves the entire system state, including all your open programs and files, to disk so you can quickly resume from where you left off. Fast Startup mixes the traditional shutdown process with hibernation. With Fast Startup enabled, Windows 10 discards all your open programs and files as it would during a traditional shutdown , but saves the state of the Windows kernel to disk as it would during hibernation.
The next time you boot your PC, Windows restores the kernel and starts up the rest of the system. The kernel is the low-level core program at the heart of the operating system. It has full control over your computer and is one of the first things loaded during the boot process.
The hardware drivers that your computer uses to interact with its hardware devices are part of the kernel. Windows saves the current state and restores it instead of reinitializing everything.
Windows restarts your computer, but it performs a full shut down first and discards the state of the kernel while doing so. Microsoft made this decision because people experiencing problems often reboot their computers to fix them , so it makes some sense. If you prefer, you can instead perform a full shutdown by using the shutdown command from a Command Prompt or PowerShell window.
This command instructs Windows to shut down immediately and forcibly close any open applications. All you have to do then is double-click the shortcut to perform a full shutdown. If you never want to use the Fast Startup feature, you can disable it from the Control Panel. For example, some older hardware devices may not be compatible with Fast Startup and may not reinitialize themselves properly when you boot up again. It helps your PC boot faster most of the time, and you can always perform a full shutdown with the tricks we discussed earlier.
